Biaxial Flexure Strength of Reused IPS Empress Cosmo Ceramic

Abstract
Purpose : This study was to investigate the reused possibility of IPS Empress Cosmo ceramic with sprue button in the flexure strength respect.
Materials and methods : Fourty disk-shaped ceramic specimens (20 specimens: as-pressed material; 20 specimens: reused material) with approximately 1.7mm thickness and 15mm diameter were prepared by "lost wax" technique. The remnants(sprue buttons) were used for repressing. The surface _treatments for the : . discs were abraded with 320, 800, 1200, and 2000 grit SiC sandpaper. The specimens: were tested with the biaxial flexure jig(ball-on-three balls). The specimens were fractured by loading the center of disk using a universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 1.0 mm/min. The Weibull moduli also were calculated for biaxial flexural strength.
Results : The mean flexure strength of each group was 122.2¡¾18.3 MPa (as-pressed ceramics) and 113.5¡¾20.3 MPa (reused ceramics). There was no significant difference in strength between the as-pressed and the reused IPS Empress Cosmo ceramic (P>0.05).
Conclusions : This implied IPS Empress Cosmo ceramic with sprue button could be used one more time in the flexure strength respect.
